Kevin & Claire Hansen, Merlot Grove, Padthaway, SA
Merlot Grove is situated on the main highway 5 kms
north of Padthaway, the gateway to the world famous Limestone
Coast Wine region. The vineyard set on terra rossa soil over
limestone produces slow ripening premium quality Merlot. [Vintage
2003 to be bottled later 2004] Chardonnay have also been planted
and the first bottling will be from Vintage 2005. All vines
are hand pruned to maintain an open canopy and maximize fruit
quality.
The property is certified organic by BFA number 5303A. We
also produce fat lambs, beef cattle and Phalaris seed (sold
for pasture development). Peking Ducks are used to control
snails and we also keep a small gaggle of geese to shepherd
the ducks.
We
are registered WWOOF hosts. This is an Australian organisation
with a registry of hosts on Australian Farms whose beliefs
in a safer environment are reflected in practices of bio dynamic
farming. We enjoy sharing our home and work with those overseas
guests who choose to stay with us. The cultural exchange is
always a stimulating experience and we have made many friends.
Pockets of native bush have been planted to supplement our
old towering gums and provide understory vegetation to attract
small native birds in an effort to help balance the ecology.
