Brett and Melissa Munchenberg, Loxton North [Riverland] SA

Brett and Melissa own a 18 hectare property at Loxton North. It was originally a soldiers settlement are established following World War 2. Brett moved to the property in 1989 after living in Loxton nearly all his life.

The conversion to organic began around 1995/96 after encouragement from a wholesaler in the Adelaide market. We were growing mainly citrus and apples insecticide free then. The first vines to become A grade certified were a block of Cabernet Sauvignon, the trial was a success and the entire vineyard then went into organic conversion.

The majority of the vineyard is sprinkler irrigated which helps with frost control around bud burst. Vine growth and fruit production is carefully monitored to ensure quality fruit is grown at lower than average yields. Most vines are hand pruned and machine harvested.

Vine plantings consist of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Ruby Cabernet, Grenache, Petit Verdot, Semillon and Chardonnay. Any fruit surplus to OVA requirements is sold to a local winery. Certified organic walnuts and pomegranates are also grown.
