Terry Markou, Cheveat Estate, Gawler River [Adelaide Plains]
SA
The
Markou's own a 40-acre vineyard at Cheveat Estate. The vineyard
was established in 1997 and is located in the Adelaide Plains
Region alongside the Gawler River in South Australia. The
property is certified ‘A’ Grade Organic by Biological
Farmers Of Australia.
Cheveat Estate comprises rich fertile soil and a warm climate
which gives the grapes full fruit flavors with intense rich
colors. Cheveat Estate is a family owned vineyard and managed
by Terry Markou, Theodore Markou Senior with assistance
from Theodore Markou Junior. The Markou family has been
involved in organic growing since the early 1930’s
originally on the Greek Island of Xios migrating to Australia
in 1955 to continue the original organic practices and methods
achieved in Greece.
The vines are grown on a trellis system with minimal use
of drip irrigation. The vine plantings consist of Merlot,
Shiraz, and Cabernet with Sauvignon Blanc being introduced
this season 2004. The vines are carefully pruned by hand,
ensuring restriction of tonnage to 4 to 5 tonne an acre,
therefore maintaining an open canopy and increasing the
quality of the grapes. Cheveat Estate is a proud supplier
of organic grapes to Organic Vignerons Australia.
